The vision for Uganda to commence commercial production of electric mobile passenger vehicles by 2040 is gaining momentum, fueled by optimism from technology and innovation experts. At the recent Efficiency and Electric Mobility Conference 2023 in Kampala, convened by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, stakeholders expressed confidence in Uganda’s potential to embrace electric mobility as a key driver of sustainable transportation.
According to Dr. Monica Musenero, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovations, electric mobility presents a lucrative opportunity for Uganda, with the global industry projected to reach $26.6 trillion by 2030. The continent’s growing population further enhances the potential market for electric vehicles, with vehicle sales expected to soar from 1.2 million in 2017 to 10 million by 2030.
Uganda’s rich mineral deposits, including lithium, cobalt, and nickel, essential for electric vehicle manufacturing, position the country favorably to tap into the burgeoning electric mobility market. The discovery of commercially viable mineral deposits, coupled with initiatives such as the launch of e-mobility cars by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and GIZ, underscores Uganda’s commitment to embracing green transport solutions.
While the shift towards electric vehicles presents challenges such as market pricing and infrastructure development, stakeholders remain optimistic about Uganda’s potential to lead the electric mobility revolution in Africa. With pioneering companies like Zembo, Bodawerk, and Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC), Uganda is laying the groundwork for a sustainable and emission-free transportation future.
As Uganda strives to achieve its climate targets, including cutting emissions and adapting to climate impacts, the adoption of electric vehicles emerges as a key mitigation measure. The recently launched Energy Policy 2023, aimed at scaling up access to electricity, further aligns with Uganda’s vision for sustainable socio-economic transformation.
In conclusion, Uganda’s journey towards producing electric vehicles by 2040 signifies a bold step towards embracing green transport solutions and reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.
